Contents count as well. Even if you are letting out a property unfurnished it will have cookers, washing machines and other white goods in the kitchen, as well as carpets on the floors and possibly curtains on the windows. All this needs protecting and the right landlord insurance policy will be tailored to do so – ‘limited contents’ plans are the ones you need in these circumstances. If you are letting out a property fully furnished you also need a proper landlords policy rather than a standard plan. The premiums on this should be reasonable because insurers know that the total value of contents even on fully furnished lets won’t he as high as on similar owner-occupied homes. So you won’t be paying for cover you don’t need. It is also worth suggesting to your tenants that they buy insurance to protect their own possessions. That way they can claim on their insurer after any incident. And they are hopefully more likely to look after what they have.
